Brave Robot
Perfect Day uses a process called precision fermentation to create milk proteins.
How does it work?
Instead of milking cows, Perfect Day uses a process called precision fermentation to create milk proteins from microflora (like yeast) and plants. The precision fermentation process looks a lot like the fermentation process used to make kombucha or beer, and the output is pure milk protein – no lactose, no hormones, no antibiotics. It’s dairy, made better. Perfect Day selects microflora, like yeast, and encodes them with the DNA sequence for whey protein. (They get the sequence from an open source database online – just like downloading an ebook!). The microflora are placed in a fermentation tank (just like brewing beer) along with water and plant sugars to ferment. As they ferment, the microflora produce milk proteins identical to milk protein from a cow. Perfect Day filters the milk protein out from the microflora, and the result is pure milk protein, made with zero animals.
Why is it needed?
Compared to traditional dairy ice cream, Brave Robot ice cream reduces green house gas emissions by 72 %, non-renewable energy by 61 %, blue water consumption by 23 % compared to ice cream made through conventional dairy production methods. Data from ISO-certified, third-party-validated report.
How does it improve life?
If US consumers switched from animal dairy ice cream to Brave Robot animal-free dairy ice cream for one year, we'd save the equivalent of 1,854,348 cars on the road and blue water from 27,876 Olympic swimming pools.
