Leaves is a coffin that provides humans with the opportunity to acknowledge the transformation from death into new life. With the use of fungus, it helps our bodies have a greater purpose after we die. Made with biodegradable materials, this coffin’s rope has a dye embedded with spores. Once the body is buried, fungus grows to speed up the decomposition and absorb the body’s toxins so on the nutrients go into the soil. After the fungi decomposes the body, a tree is planted above the burial site to symbolize the greater purpose our bodies can have. The coffin can easily be handcrafted and ceating it is quite meditative and emotional. By being apart of the coffin’s creation, those mourning can find healing and acceptance.
