Project First Light
Bringing the internet to 'the world's most forgotten island' - community maintained connectivity
Rich in natural resources, the DRC is still ranked 176th in the world in terms of human development (U.N.). Since 2013, one of Fjord’s founders, Mike Beeston, has been working in the most troubled region, Kivu, in East DRC. Together with local people, he founded ‘Ensemble Pour La Difference’, a social business incubator that provides design and innovation mentorship, along with loans to small businesses that provide value to the community. Fjord partnered with Ensemble on First Light to help Congolese people innovate with design-led strategy, training and technology. Together, we brought internet to the remote island of Idjwi. In June 2016, internet arrived to Idjwi. Our display system now provides weather and news to passers-by and 20–30 users are connecting to our WiFi access point each day. We’re now defining the community operational model for the internet, bringing more employment, health services and educational content to hospitals and schools.
