DESIGNED BY
Martijn Schildkamp, an architect and building engineer who has devoted his life to create safe building solutions for the people who need it the most. His focus is on low-tech earthquake resistant building techniques, the use of natural materials and their technology transfer. He identified the need for reliable and tested knowledge while building earthquake resistant schools in Nepal from 2007-2012 for his Smart Shelter Foundation; a finalist for Index Award 2009. A passionate devotee!

Smart Shelter Research
SSR is an open source platform for research and exchange of non-engineered building knowledge.
Smart Shelter Research has identified an urgent need for reliable and tested knowledge about non-engineered building techniques. Especially regarding low-tech seismic design principles, alternative materials and unconventional construction methods, which are often based on observation and opinion, but seldom on proven fact.
SSR is focusing on design specifications and limitations, material properties, structural safety, seismic behavior, health issues, and whatever is needed for practical use of such techniques.
The aim is to find clear answers that are fully researched, proven and validated, and to publish just one correct and easy-to-use manual per technique. Improving the technology transfer will lead to an overall improvement of efficiency, costs, quality, safety and risk reduction; in order to save lives.
It will be a dynamic, interactive and open source platform run by an appointed team of experts, where questions, problems, discussions and solutions come together.
