AVAZ - Making every voice heard!
A Unique Word Game That Enables Children With Autism To Communicate In Any Language.
Some four million people in India suffer from cerebral palsy and other disabilities that make it difficult or impossible for them to speak. Giving them a voice is the job of Ajit Narayanan's low-cost invention, AVAZ. Even someone with only limited movement control can use AVAZ to construct phrases that are spoken out loud by an artificial voice. AVAZ is a unique app that provides a 'voice' to the non-verbal, allowing them to communicate and express themselves. While working with kids who have trouble speaking, Ajit Narayanan sketched out a way to think about language in pictures, to relate words and concepts in "maps". The idea now powers an app that helps nonverbal people communicate, and the big idea behind it, a language concept called FreeSpeech, has exciting potential. The Vision: "Making Every Voice Heard!" In 2010, AVAZ won the National Award for Empowerment of People with Disabilities from the President of India.
