Medilable Safety System
A system for labelling medicine designed to prevent medication errors in hospitals

Medication errors are the most commonly reported treatment errors in the hospital sector. Even a tiny medication dosage mistake like a decimal point, which could easily be made by any medical professional, can be catastrophic for the patient.

Medication errors happen an estimated one million each year, contributing to 7,000 deaths. On average there is one medication error every day for every inpatient. Although most hospitals set up elaborate systems to check and double check orders before drugs are given to patients, some are more vigilant than others.

The Medilabel Safety System© is designed to make correct drug administration easier for medical professionals and life safer for patients by making the medicine packages easier to tell apart.

“As designers we have found it extremely meaningful to use our skills to create a system for medical labels that will hopefully save lives, “ said the e-Types design team.

“For patients, a lowered risk of medication errors not only prevents avoidable pain and suffering. Getting the right medicine at the right time is essential to recovery.”

By combining user studies with design skills and a deep knowledge of systematics and cognition, the design system uses a specially designed typeface as well as a few powerful visual tools to make it easier for nurses and doctors to distinguish between different medical products.

“As a doctor or nurse, it’s a traumatizing experience to accidentally administer the incorrect medicine or incorrect dose to a patient. Thus, a decrease in the risk factors will enhance not only the safety and sense of security for patients, but also the quality of the medical staffs’ working life.”
