DIIA
A phone application which citzens use to report on the war in Ukraine and access aid.
How does it work?
The app, which translates in Ukrainian to 'action' was launched in 2020 to 'digitise' Ukraine. Initially, it could be used to store documents such as driver's licenses and passport information. Since the beginning of the war, new features have been added that enable citizens to report property damaged by bombing and apply for compensation, keep crucial documents close to hand in refugee camps and log the movements of Russian troops.
Why is it needed?
It greatly benefits the Ukrainian government in the efforts to fight Russia. Around 18m million people — about 40 per cent of the population — are using the app and so there are far more eyes on the Russian troops. It has turned the Russian invasion into the first digitised war.
How does it improve life?
It has made life for Ukrainian refugees much easier as they have access to all of their important documents in digital form (which is considered equally valid in Ukraine). Also, it has many possibilities for the war against Russia as it takes into account citizen's information as well as simply information from drones.
