Tao is a ceramic series of tea vessels conceived and developed with the aid of 3D printing techniques and 3D animation software. The project challenges the traditional misconceptions of digital design by engaging in the most primitive traditions of Chinese ceramic casting. The Tao series re-imagines the future of additive manufacturing and dying material cultures in China's fastest growing economy. The work seeks to present contradictions that are misrepresented by the abundance of timeless digital design; grounding digital design and additive manufacturing in the tactility of clay ceramics and the rituals of Chinese tea ceremonies. This comes as a challenge as well as an opportunity to develop material expressions and multiple readings of the object, both objectively as a product and subjectively as a vessel for generational knowledge.
