Lykkeliga - handball for disabled kids
Lykkeliga is a danish handball league for children with special needs.
Lykkeliga (in english 'The League of Happiness) was founded by the former professional handball player, Rikke Nielsen, when her daughter with Down's Syndrome couldn't find a team where she could play handball due to her special needs. Rikke then decided to start a handball team for children with special needs in the northern part of Denmark, and after a couple of weeks the team had 40 kids participating each week.
Then Rikke and her friend, Mikael, decided to start the first handball league in Denmark for children with special needs and design a tournament structure so that kids with special needs across Denmark could participate and have a sense of belonging and connect with others just like them through their common love and passion for handball.
At the moment Lykkeliga has more than 1200 players across Denmark on 70 different teams. All the coaches of the teams are working voluntarily.
Lykkeliga and the tournament structure doesn't exist in other countries.
