The Friendship Bench
Grandmothers trained in talk therapy in treating people suffering from depression.
Over 400 grandmothers have been trained to deliver talk therapy, which they provide for free in communities across Zimbabwe. According to the World Health Organization, more than 300 million people around the world suffer from depression and the condition contributes to 800,000 suicides per year. The Friendship Bench initiative has been wildly successful – the brightly-coloured benches are a very visible sign that help is at hand, and the New York City and Zimbabwe programmes each attract around 30,000 people each year. Programmes like these, which draw on community expertise, could be key to treating people suffering from depression. According to one member of the project, “This may well be a solution that every country in the world could benefit from.”
