Redesign the Kit
The design improves the experience of getting sexual assault evidence kit for victims and doctors.
In the US, someone is sexually assaulted every 72 seconds, less than 30% get a kit or report the crime, and less than 1% of cases end in a conviction. Most doctors who collect the evidence after an assault have no training and have never seen a kit before and so it can take anywhere from 2-10 hours to complete. The new design is focused on two parts: 1) making the process easier for doctors so that they are incentivized to offer more kits to victims while also decreasing the time that it takes to collect evidence, and 2) bringing the victim more transparency around sexual assault resources and empowering them during the rape kit evidence collection. It does so in four ways: 1) It includes color coordinated envelopes to help doctors see what steps they have to do and ones that are optional, 2) includes graphics on the envelopes to better show doctors what to do, 3) a victim-facing app that lets the victim follow along and take control of the exam and 4) capabilities to track the kit.
