Continuous delivery of insulin more closely mimics a healthy pancreas, providing better long term outcomes, but existing injection methods, such as syringes or cannulas, are difficult for some diabetics to administer. The Omnipod is the first wearable insulin pump system worn directly on the body like a patch. The device pumps insulin directly into the body via a tubing set connected to a cannula painlessly inserted into the skin, and communicates wirelessly with a handheld Personal Diabetes Manager monitoring the process. The small patch-like device is replaced every third day and can be worn discretely underneath clothing and during showering, swimming etc.
