Globally, women are being encouraged to deliver in facilities and seek family planning methods, but there is still a large gap. The post-partum period is the ideal time for family planning. Postpartum IUDs are reversible, cost-effective, and can be inserted safely and quickly by a trained health worker. Mama-U is a postpartum uterine trainer that supports training in postpartum IUD, balloon tamponade insertions and postpartum care. Mama-U was developed with Jhpiego and won a Saving Lives at Birth Grant in 2012. The Mama-U model’s portability, durability, and reduced cost helps provide clinical training on PPIUCDs to a larger number of service providers with fewer resources than with the traditional model. It also enables providers to explain and demonstrate the procedure to their clients during counseling. After training with this model, health workers in India reduced IUD expulsion rates from 10% to around 2%.
