How does it work?
The current socio-environmental crisis generated by the actual economic model has led to an overexploitation of the planet's resources. This has led to problems that endanger the ecological balance and generate social destabilization. "Streptonomy", the heroine of the game, is a cellulolytic bacterium that persists in fulfilling its ecological cycle by fighting against agents such as toxic waste, tourism, urbanization, bad land use practices. Its role is to degrade organic matter to create soil. It travels from the bottom of the wetland to the surface where it nourishes the life outside. It is a video game made with watercolors by artists and then digitized. The player represented by the bacteria must collect nutrients and collectibles in order to overcome obstacles, learn cultural information about the chinampa in order to save the chinampa. Why is it needed?
The current socio-environmental crisis generated has led to a degradation of the cultural and agro-ecological system of Xochimilco: The Chinampa system. This has led to problems that endanger the ecological balance and generate social destabilization of Xochimilco (such as lost of cultural practice) and its agroecological system of the Chinampa which is inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. This serious video game has for purpose divulgation, awareness and preservation of Xochimilco and its Chinampas. The main idea of the game is to show the importance of soil bacteria and its preservation against urbanism, contamination and other environmental threats to maintain the agricultural system of the chinampa. The Chinampa is a peculiar agricultural system, near to hydroponic system, very well integrated to its environment. This is a an intensive, organic system heritage of preshispanic cultures which can serve as a model for highly productive culture and ecological system.
How does it improve life?
Given this concern, the FlashAct initiative "Science, Art and Technology", which promotes transdisciplinary forms of collaboration for the development of innovative proposals with an ecological and social perspective, allowed us to condense a project with an artistic and technological outlet: the design of a video game that makes visible the importance of the Xochimilco chinampera zone in Mexico. The chinampa is an agroecological system that allows for sustainable food production and also is linked to cultural practice which can heal the social tissue. The game is important at different levels of society: localy, regionally and globally. Indeed, locally it is a way to educate and revalue the culture heritage of Xochimilco. Its preservation has beneficial environmental impact for Mexico City and also is a way to provide food for a growing population. Globally, the chinampa system can be a model for sustainable and intensive agriculture.
