BRUIE
The Buoyant Rover for Under-Ice Exploration could help discover lifeforms beyond earth.
Various extraterrestial planets and moons have chilly waters on their surface. As far as we can tell from Earth, water is the fundamental environment for lifeforms to grow. In order to test for life beyond our planet, we need specialized tools to achieve it.BRUIE, or the Buoyant Rover for Under-Ice Exploration, is a rover developed by NASA to detect extraterrestrial lifeforms. It does this by staying afloat beneath the ice while rolling along, gathering various data on "parameters related to life, such as dissolved oxygen, water salinity, pressure and temperature". Currently, it is being tested in the freezing waters of Antarctica, but is expected to launch in the upcoming decade. It is noted that the rover currently measures parameters based on the Earth's environment, although other currently unknown parameters could facilitate life on these planets. That being said, this could be one of our first steps towards discovering life beyond Earth.
