From Waste to Biomaterial
We have developed and designed a sensational prototype for new waste and mycelium-based biomaterials
Earth’s planetary boundaries are under pressure. To alleviate this pressure we need to develop regenerative design solutions that move beyond technical circularity into the biosphere of the cradle to cradle paradigm. Søren Jensen therefore set out to test whether it is possible to grow a temporary pavilion. The result of this experiment was a roofing membrane grown using coffee grounds, mycelium spores and organic materials. This membrane verified that it is indeed possible to grow building materials that are durable, light-weight and strong, fire and water resistant and circular. The experiences from the pavilion project evolved into a winning project in the Circular Construction Challenge. This project focuses on how to develop and test the new waste and mycelium based biomaterials for the building industry. By transferring the biggest recycling process found in nature to the building industry, we believe that we can develop regenerative materials.
