Instruments of Empowerment
Instruments of Empowerment is a systems-level response to challenge educational inequities.
Although the US boasts record-breaking graduation rates, an estimated 2/3 grads are not considered prepared for college. This reality is heightened in low-income communities, where students face a range of educational inequities.Studies prove that student achievement increases with parent engagement, even in the face of injustices. For decades, schools have used report cards to share student progress. Unfortunately, the majority use unclear evaluation systems & lack opportunities for agency. However, their widespread use & familiarity make them a perfect vehicle for intervention.Through this redesign, students are more informed & clear about their performance. Parents are more aware about their student’s progress & can become activists for their communities. Teachers have a stronger instrument to encourage collaboration, in addition to more data for customizing their approaches. This design can create new opportunities for intervention & accountability across educational ecosystems.
