Nifty Feeding Cup
A $1 reusable cup for feeding breast milk to newborns with breastfeeding difficulties.
Low-birth-weight (LBW) contributes to 60 to 80% of all neonatal deaths. The global prevalence of LBW is about 16%, which amounts to 20 million LBW infants born each year - 97% of them in developing countries. The World Health Organization calls breastfeeding “one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival.” Nifty Feeding Cup is a $1 reusable silicone cup for feeding breast milk to newborns with breastfeeding difficulties. It is a simple to use, easy to clean cup that allows the infant to control the pace of feeding and help the transition to feeding exclusively from the breast. PATH developed the cup in collaboration with Seattle Children’s Hospital, the University of Washington, and Laerdal Global Health. Nifty Feeding Cup has the potential to help millions of babies born in Africa and Asia who can coordinate their suckling and breathing, but cannot adequately breastfeed.
