Excelscope
It brings expertise of smart diagnosis to rural health centres via low-cost smartphone based device.
84% of Uganda’s population lives in rural areas, with poor access to healthcare. The health centres located here lack trained staff and equipments, resulting in misdiagnosis. This leads to an ethical problem of prescribing wrong medication to patients, health problem of development of resistance to medicine, logistical problem of medicine shortage and price inflation. Hence, there is a need to equip these health centres to provide a more reliable diagnosis.Excelscope is a low-cost device that uses the abilities of a smartphone to operate as a smart microscope. It is designed to be locally produced and repaired with no electronic components. It consists of a smartphone lens module that when reversed provides magnification. This provides an opportunity to reuse parts of used smartphones, thus facilitating both affordability and sustainability. The images captured by the device are processed by AI which enables healthcare staff to provide a reliable diagnosis, either remotely or in person.
