Active Teaching and Learning
Empowering teachers to educate themselves and their students by maintaining curiosity and creativity
Active Teaching and Learning (ATL) focuses on the principles and practices of learner-centered pedagogy. The Belgian Development Agency (BTC) collaborated with Ugandan educational experts to create content for the local context. However, content lacked structure and was only usable in a training setting led by a facilitator. Using co-creation as methodology, Design without Borders made the transition into an intuitive and interactive tool for the classroom, together with the teachers. The content was reorganised into three elements: a written guide with theory on the methodology; a set of method cards for both in and out of the classroom; and a classroom poster as a visual reminder. The new ATL manual is cohesive, intuitive and easy to use for all teachers. The content also received a visual redesign inviting teachers to be curious and actively use it as a tool. This project has been approved by the Ministry of Education and is currently used by teachers all over Uganda.
