Alter is an extension for Facebook that enables Facebook users to understand the effects of behind-the-scenes algorithms that customise their personal news feeds. In this customised information flow, there is less room for the chance encounters that bring different opinion, insight and learning. Alter generates visualisations of the way that content is fed to our news feeds and allows an individual exchange his or her newsfeed with other individuals - giving each one a way to disrupt the content they typically see - their “filter bubble.”
