Seeing is believing: the platform putting trust back into visual media

What’s the design in a nutshell?
Truepic uses groundbreaking technology to authenticate images and videos as they’re captured -- one of the most effective methods to ensure what goes online is real.

Why is it needed?
Fake media is rampant on the internet. Whether it’s an innocently optimised selfie to the more concerning political deep fakes speech, it has become a serious threat. And what’s most dangerous, is that they’re difficult and costly for anyone to tell if images or videos are authentic, whether it be a skilled individual, organisation and even institutions. Not only does this spread misinformation and enable fraud, but erodes public trust in digital media as a whole.

How does it work?
Truepic tackles fake media from both ends of the chain. It can preserve the integrity of an image or video you’ve taken and help detect fraudulent materials edited and uploaded by others.

First, a user requests a photo or video from the sender, whether it’s photos of a holiday rental from an Airbnb host, a seller you’re looking to buy an expensive item from, or even a selfie from a prospective Tinder date. Once the material is uploaded, the platform verifies that an image or video hasn’t been altered or edited, and watermarks it with a timestamp, geocode, and other metadata.

Truepic has also partnered with the likes of Qualcomm, Adobe, Microsoft and the Coalition for Content Provenance Authenticity (C2PA) to trailblaze a pathway to scaling this provenance technology directly into smartphones and for public consumption on the internet in the near future.

Truepic's Foresight project developed the world's first hardware secured image capture into a smartphone, the best way to scale authenticated image capture around the world.

"Truepic's provenance technology has authenticated over two million images and videos in over 150 countries worldwide."

How does it improve life?
The technology allows for companies, businesses, and organisations to trust what they hear and see online. For example, when an insurance company runs a virtual inspection using Truepic's technology it improves the life of the insured, desperate for reimbursement to fix their home after a natural disaster. Or when an NGO uses Truepic Vision to conduct monitoring and due diligence of a project, it can do so faster and cheaper than any alternative.

What’s the impact to date?
To date, Truepic's provenance technology has authenticated over two million images and videos in over 150 countries worldwide. On average, replacing a human-centric inspection with an authenticated Truepic inspection saves 12.7 kilos of CO2 emitted per inspection. According to Truepic, one client alone prevented the emission of 121,109 kilos of CO2 via Vision. As a point of reference, it would have taken over 5,000 trees one full year to absorb that amount of CO2.

Every year, we collectively capture 1.2 trillion images. As Truepic's technology scales it will begin to deliver trust in many of the images that circulate the internet to counter disinformation, accelerate business, and restore a shared sense of visual reality.
