Over the past decade, many researchers have been working on small, portable and cheap diagnostic devices in a bid to improve global access to healthcare. Most recently, the MIT Little Devices Lab came up with a set of building ‘blocks’ to allow lab workers to easily assemble their own diagnostic tests. Using the same approach as home-pregnancy tests, these blocks make use of lateral flow technology to test blood or urine samples to help detect Zika virus, cancer, and other infectious diseases.
