A genetically engineered plant that grows in the shape of a chair.

Functionality and use of design
This is a plant that is grown in a shape of a chair. The shape can be “mass grown” as a standard size chair OR individualized by a full body scan of the customer, the preferred sitting position and personal color choice. The seed is genetically programed and then grown by the customer.

How did this design improve life?
This project introduces a new and positive way of using gene technology. It started with the idea of having products grow on trees. Natural substance such as nut shells, bark and leaves can be very strong and durable. Various cultures have been using these exact materials to create useful product in their everyday life. What if we can expand the potential of natural grown substances and integrate everyday disposable products into the natural life cycle of a tree? What if we could grow tooth picks or chop sticks as needles on genetically engineered pine trees? When they dry and fall they can be collected as fruit.

I took this idea a step forward by engineering a whole plant to grow as a chair. All the essential elements to its existence will still be there but in addition, you would be able to sit on it comfortably. You would be able to order it in the size, shape and color you want; grow it yourself in your backyard as garden furniture or even buy it as a grown ‘furniture” piece from a professional grower.

There will be almost zero production and transporting costs. How much does it cost to transport a seed? The only resources you need are water earth and light, no waste, no pollution, if you throw it away, all is organic.

This line of thought can bring us back into the natural cycle, not as takers but as makers of a new and productive system that combines nature’s extraordinary power with visionary human technology.

Drawbacks of life improvement
Genetically manipulation of any form of life carries a large responsibility. Extensive research and monitoring need to applied in order to make sure this plant does not conflict with existing species and will not harm the ecosystem if it finds its way into the wild. Parameters as time, improper care and surroundings can affect the growth of this plant and cause less than perfect results.

Research and need
- Extensive observation of plants, and their growth patterns. (In botanic gardens and hothouses)
- A study of existing and future gene technology.
