Dongtan Eco-City
Th design of an ecological urban community

Urban areas are the world's major producers of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution. When asked to create a city for 500,000 inhabitants in the Dongtan area in Shanghai, the design team realised that the sensitive ecosystem at the site of the project in the Yangtze River delta called for a design with minimum ecological impact. Hence, the infrastructure of Dongtan Eco-City will encourage the use of public transportation, cycling and walking.

Dongtan will be a Zero Carbon Emission zone, and farmland within the Dongtan site will use organic farming methods to grow food. Waste is a resource and will be recycled as biomass for energy production. Energy will be provided almost entirely by renewable means.
