Education is a fundamental human right, one essential for the exercise of all others. It promotes individual freedom and empowerment and yields important development benefits. Yet millions of children and adults remain deprived of educational opportunities, many as a result of poverty. The irony of it being, education is the most powerful tool to lift people out of poverty.

Tuition fees at Ivy League schools average around $55,000 annually (and that's not even including living costs). That's more than the median American income of $37,000 a year! Taking into account that more than a third of the world's population lives on less than $2 a day, only a select few have access to world-class education from highly competitive universities. Until now, that is...

Coursera, co-founded by two Stanford computer science professors Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller, is revolutionizing global online higher education. Since launching in April 2012, Coursera has already amassed a staggering 4 million students (and counting) from every country in the world. The numbers are jaw dropping. The astonishing online-platform has over 9.5 million enrollments, from students representing 195 countries, across 386 courses from the top 62 universities in the world.

The impact of this visionary idea is even more sensational. Coursera has the potential to provide education to empower people and improve their lives, the lives of their families and the communities they live in. Rather than being limited to a few hundred students in a classroom, Coursera is reaching millions. The results have also proven highly effective. A prime example of Coursera’s impact is a 15-year-old Mongolian student, who took Coursera classes as part of a blended course, receiving a perfect score on the final exam. Now the same student is applying to M.I.T. and Berkley.

Many question online education, however it has been proven to be at least as effective as face-to-face learning. The difference is, it reaches millions. As M.I.T. president L. Rafael Reif said, “there is a new world unfolding, and everyone will have to adapt.”

Coursera is now offering its students the option of buying a certificate of completion upon passing the course, but also offers them for free for those in financial need.
