ARCHIVE – Inspiring Waste Sorting Solution
A simpler and more elegant waste sorting solution that ads flow to daily recycling and saves space.
How does it work?
This effective and tactile waste sorting system brings order into chaos and adapts to daily lives of every household or office. It divides a waste bin into different sorting compartments that flatten when not in use and expand with more waste.
The compartments are portable for emptying separately or all at once, and each compartment is clearly labelled with a pictogram and a color assigned to each sorting category.
Because of the water and dirt repellent coating, no in-lay plastic bags are required (except for residual and bio waste in accordance with regulations). The bags can be easily cleaned by just wiping with a wet cloth or machine washing. To prevent bio waste from smelling, bio bin is allowing air from all sides. It is made from recycled plastic and can be placed in a dish washer.
The system comes in different colors, sizes, and configurations to best suit each space or cabinet type. It can host as many sorting compartments as it is needed.
Why is it needed?
This design is a solution to a large global problem. We are supposed to sort our waste, but there is a lack of space and suitable infrastructure in our households and offices to sort different materials effectively, which results in chaos in our spaces and a lot of materials not being sorted properly. Instead of being reused, they are being incinerated and end up polluting the atmosphere.
This timeless design combines furniture and fashion with waste sorting to give this often-overlooked environmental problem a fresh angle and to inspire us to recycle more. Based on series of studies of recycling processes and journeys of materials in and out of our spaces, this solution is better adjusted to the daily flows. The materials we sort vary daily. Hence, there is no need for several half empty bins to take space. Therefor this solution is especially needed in small urban spaces where sorting and keeping spaces organized is a great challenge.
How does it improve life?
This design aims to reshape our waste sorting experience. It ads flow to our daily sorting processes and makes them more simple, calming and elegant. It aims to change the way we view waste; instead of waste, we want to elevate materials that are going to waste, instead of throwing them in one bin, we are "archiving" them to be reused, and instead of hiding them, we are displaying the sorting process to inspire others to do the same.
Inspired by the flexible construction of a python jaw, this system is specifically designed for circularity and zero-waste production. It utilizes recycled polyester and small industrial leftovers to showcase how a product of high quality can be locally and cost efficiently manufactured from materials that were once classified as waste. This design is highly scalable and has a global potential. As more effective waste sorting is a simple, yet very impactful step every household and office can take to preserve the resources and the wellbeing of our planet.
