Ébresztő
A card game to break down stereotypes
How does it work?
Ébreszt? (meaning wake up in hungarian) is like UNO, you can put colour on colour and mark on mark in a circle. The game ends when someone runs out of cards - meaning they wake up. Each card has an action that must be performed if it is played. For example, when the "Controller" comes, everyone has to stand up and in the Pub you can distribute your cards among the others. There are character cards that affect the actions of players in a positive or negative way. The "Politician" character card can be used to place any card, while the "Allergic" card can only be used to place one type of card. There are interconnections between players, there is always someone playing with cards face up, and many other little details have been added to Ébreszt? that make the game exciting. Some cards explicitly illustrate the discrimination of different minorities or marginalised groups - not directly but in a very sensual way.
Why is it needed?
Racism and intolerance are responsible for many of the human tragedies that have occurred in the past and continue to recur today - wars, unjust judicial prosecutions, discrimination against minorities. Discrimination, whether it is based on a person's age, gender, disability, ethnicity, race, religion or sexual orientation, can be found everywhere: on the street, in the workplace, in the shop or even in schools. Ébreszt? can help to recognise, understand and reduce discrimination and increase tolerance towards others.
How does it improve life?
The game gives us the chance to experience what it's like to be a minority and shows the absurd, unfair ways in which we are discriminated in life - just like in the game. So that we can became more tolerant while playing a fun and easy game together.
