18 Wheelin' Women
This design addresses the societal block caused by gender bias with women entering blue-collar jobs.
For my senior design studio, I decided to tackle a real social issue within the United State's job employment system: how social "norms" of gender and gender bias restrict women from applying and working within the “blue-collar” job sector. Considering the current truck driving industry is only 7% women and is need of drivers, they need women to fill in these vital positions. As a response, I developed a conceptual start-up, 18 Wheelin' Women, a trucking recruiting and training center specifically for women wanting to enter the trucking industry. 18 Wheelin' Women has a structured onboarding plan beginning with a meticulous job application that does not deter women from applying, to continued encouragement and recruitment to applicants, to the women-only Commercial Driver License training course at our facility, to lastly contact touchpoints for the new woman trucker at her entry-level trucking position. Overall, this design allows women to perceive trucking as a job option for them.
