Without being recycled, plastics will slowly break down in oceans and landfills, causing harm to wildlife and ecosystems. Over time, plastics degrade into micro plastics, releasing powerful green house gases like methane which contribute to our planet getting hotter. Coldharbour Tiles aims to prevent further plastic pollution from entering oceans and landfills by repurposing it into long-lasting tiles used for walls and decoration. Their goal is to reduce some of the 300+ million tons of plastic produced globally every year, while also creating a luxury product that values quality and design. Coldharbour Tiles are made from 100% recycled high-density polyethylene or HDPE (marked with the #2 recycle code). HDPE is commonly used for products such as shampoo bottles, water jugs, and bottle caps. It is water-proof, highly-durable, and resists insects, rot, and other chemicals. The concept for Coldharbour Tiles was developed at IPRC Engineering School in Kigali, Rwanda.
