Cohabitation by Design is a flat pack furniture kit designed for attracting and living together with migrating birds. The project challenges the idea of 'existing with' the environment by treating migratory animals passing through human-dominated areas with hospitality. This kit transforms ordinary domestic objects, such as desks and jars, into interspecies meeting places. Focused on migratory songbirds and their need to hydrate during stopovers, this project offers a convenient way for people to provide sanctuary to the birds by erecting a specially designed rehydration table below their window. Cohabitation by Design re-imagines the animal-human relationship by exploring the space in between anthropocentric and biocentric perspectives and adding new layers of meaning to familiar objects.
