Affordable farming equipment adapted to local context
Design for local context results in quality, affordable farming equipment and new jobs and skills
Farming requires tillers and trailers to carry agricultural goods. Existing solutions were too expensive or bad quality for the Ugandan context. Imported trailers are not adapted to the rugged conditions in Uganda and break easily. In addition, the imported power tiller had a tendency to break due to stress caused by the load it must carry on the bumpy roads and rough fields of Uganda.
Working closely with Ugandan farmers and manufacturers, we co-created both a trailer and a unique adapter that connects the trailer to the tiller. The trailer is designed based on input from farmers and their expressed needs. The adapter flexes under heavy impact and removes the stress on the power tiller and the trailer it is pulling. In this way, we were able to increase the lifespan of the tools needed for farming in Uganda. The result not only gives farmers better quality tools and more affordable equipment, but since they are made locally, we also create jobs and skills within the community
