TERRA-MEPP
An agricultural robot that links genetic crop data with the highest-yielding plants.
TERRA-MEPP is a low-cost, autonomous robot that analyzes biofuel crops throughout the growing season. The robot’s sensors collect an unprecedented amount of field data, and high-throughput analytical strategies quickly analyze it to pinpoint plants with desirable yield and sustainability traits.
Twice a day, in more than 2,500 plots, the robot treks between rows of crops evaluating the plants on each side simultaneously. In seconds, the robot’s sensors collect imaging and microclimate data for each plant. Using these data, TERRA-MEPP software constructs a 3D image to predict the yield of each plant.
Designed based on rovers that survey collapsed buildings and map storm drains, TERRA-MEPP can traverse fields, treading through soggy soils and withstanding all weather conditions. This battery-operated rover is more compact, mobile and precise than competing systems on the market, especially large agricultural gantries. It’s also much more affordable; an entry-level unit cost $5,000
