Fruit Bowl
A mold-detecting fruit bowl that alerts you to rotting fruit before it goes bad
Avoidable food waste is defined as food that is still edible, but has been disposed of due to exceeding its "Best Before" date. Statistics show that of the main food groups, fruit is unavoidably wasted the most, as 440,000 tonnes is wasted each year from our homes in the UK.
The solution: a sensor system contained within fruit bowl to notify the user when the fruit is beginning to rot, reminding the user to eat the fruit and thus reducing food waste.
The system detects ethylene levels that are released during the ripening process, when levels increase this acts as the trigger.
