Aside from the impressive aesthetics, Graft tableware is a biodegradable and creative solution to the traditional plastic cutlery used and tossed by thousands every year. Qiyun Deng’s Graft tableware targets our throw-away society and attempts to change a prevalent view of ‘disposable’ products. Cutlery made from polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable plastic derived from renewable resources such as plants, has the tactile features and forms of fruits and vegetables. Textures are reproduced with resin, functional components are 3D printed, and the two elements are ‘grafted’ together. The utensils remind users of the origins of the material and encourage us to think twice about throwing them away.
