Varanger Bird Hides
Concept for experiencing nature and wildlife throgh a series of unique hides and wind shelters.
For decades, small fishing communities in Arctic Norway have struggled with loss of jobs and lack of new opportunities. Varangers rich and unique birdlife was ignored, locally considered not to be of any value.
Biotope is an environmental protection architectural office with birdwatching expertise. In 2009 they settled in Arctic Varanger, and began devloping a concept for experiencing nature and wildlife through a series of unique hides and wind shelters. The designs carefully balance the need for visibility in order to attract and concentrate human activities, the practical requirements of the visitors and sensitivity to the needs of the birds and wildlife. The project has taught people at all levels about the unique bird species found in the region. Birding awareness and tourism have evoked a new sense of local pride and and this have positively affected the regions economy.
