The Octopus Charger - Catalyzing rural energy entrepreneurship
Recharged by solar or human power, the Octopus Charger provides village-level energy access.
Recharged by a solar panel or Nuru Energy’s own patented portable pedal generator, the Octopus Charger recharges up to 5 USB devices simultaneously, including mobile phones and Nuru’s portable rechargeable LED lights, which are fast-charged in just 20 minutes, with each one providing 1 week of light to a rural household. The technology is distributed via village-level entrepreneurs (VLEs) who sell Nuru Lights to ultra-poor, village households for only $1.50 each and then offer recharging services for mobile phones and Lights for a fee ($0.20/recharge), earning more money in 1 hour than previously earned in a day. To use the Octopus Charger, VLE’s purchase, via mobile money, “Nuru Energy credits” - 20 digit codes delivered to the VLE via SMS. Codes are entered into the Octopus keypad, which is then unlocked & can recharge as many devices as credits purchased. This system allows Nuru to earn a portion of VLE recharge revenue and thereby recover its initial loss on the Nuru Light.
