Pop-up Housing
sets up high density, modular, portable, low cost housing units from mass produced, less labor items
This design aims to provide a model for creating low cost, high density, eco friendly, large scale urban living environments which can be assembled by the inhabitants themselves on leased land out of readily available local materials.
The structures are built from heavy duty industrial warehouse shelving aka. pallet racks which are readily available around the world and cost just a bit more than the steel they are formed from. In many places there is also a thriving second hand market for pallet racks. Pallet Racks have standard load specifications which make it possible for people to design large structures without specialized training. They are modular, easy to put up and take down without special equipment, and can be modified quickly to fit the changing needs of inhabitants. With them it is possible to build multi-storey, temporary, free standing structures. This enables people to create dense living structures without permanent ownership on the land. This helps to house urban poor
