Pilot toilets in Keko Machungwa
Co-created dry toilet solutions for informal settlements.
The work is part of a multidisciplinary project in collaboration with Global Dry Toilet Association of Finland and Centre for Community Initiatives Tanzania taking place in Dar es Salaam. Its aim is to find ways to multiply improved sanitation facilities together with an urban poor community, through participatory planning, design and education supported by local and international partners. Urine diverting dry toilets do not need large infrastructures and are very appropriate for places with high water tables. Faeces are composted for a year and urine stored for at least six months before being sold as fertilizers to farmers and gardeners. The community is also selling construction services for the toilets. The project aims to improve the social wellbeing of the population living in slums by ensuring access to improved sanitation. In addition, the project intends to increase economic growth and ensure sustainability by promoting the creation of community based social enterprises.
