PreemieNatalie, MamaBreast and CarePlus
A trio of solutions for training and practice of quality essential care for small babies
Prematurity is a major cause of newborn death and disability globally. Each year, preterm complications account for over 1 million deaths, often from preventable causes. The following solutions encourage interventions that can help save the lives of these babies: PreemieNatalie: A realistic preterm simulator that supports training in skin-to-skin positioning, NG tube placement, and breast, cup, and NG tube feeding. MamaBreast: A simulator for introducing good breastfeeding practices to mothers and that realistically trains breast milk expression. CarePlus: A wrap that helps mothers provide continuous quality Kangaroo Mother Care both in facilities and after discharge. They have been developed with partners to support newborn care training programs such as Essential Care for Every Baby, Essential Care for Small Babies, and Kangaroo Mother Care. KMC can avert up to 450,000 preterm deaths each year by 2015 if near-universal coverage is achieved (Lancet, 2013). *nasogastric (NG)
