SeaGraze
Reducing methane emissions from livestock burps.
How does it work?
Based in Hawaii, the red seaweed Asparagopsis taxiformis is farmed through aquaculture. The seaweed is then processed into SeaGraze™ using 100% renewable energy. During the enteric fermentation part of the cow’s digestive process, SeaGraze™ chemically reduces the naturally occurring methane without impacting the fatty acids that help the cow make products like milk, wool, and meat. In a typical fermentation process, the H2 and CO2 combine within the stomach to create an output of CH4 (methane) that is released whenever the cow burps. However, with SeaGraze™, the H2 is blocked from the C, reducing methanogens naturally through digestion.
Why is it needed?
Breakthrough research has shown that adding just a sprinkle of this seaweed to livestock feed increases growth rate and reduces livestock methane emissions by over 90%.
