Commercializing red algae production as a feed additive for methane reductions in livestock.
Farming can produce a ton of CO2 and methane gas — two of the largest threats in greenhouse gases. Together they make up nearly 50 percent of all emissions and threaten the climate of our planet. Chemist and entrepreneur Alexia Akbay founded Symbrosia in 2018 to produce a red seaweed-based supplement that could reduce livestock methane production up to 90%. This type of red seaweed is called asparagopsis taxiformis. It is not yet commercially available, but Symbrosia is trying to change that.
