Strati 3D-Printed Car
Local Motors' Strati is the world's first 3D-printed car.
Local Motors' Strati is the world's first 3D printed car. The all-electric vehicle is made from 212 layers of carbon fiber reinforced ABS plastic using a hybrid additive/subtractive machine developed at Oak Ridge National Labs. This machine uses a large diameter extrusion head to 3D print objects at high speed, then on the same head it also uses a router to come back and machine surfaces to a more precise specification where required. This allows Local Motors to create car-scale forms very quickly and freely to machined precision, but without the necessity of forming tools. The Strati is powered by a 6.1 kwh battery and has a range of 62 miles.
