ANIT SAYAÇ (MONUMENTAL COUNTER)
A virtual monument for femicide victims.
Recent murder of Özgecan Aslan, a young Turkish female student who was murdered due to her resistance to rape attempt by a local bus driver in Turkey, restarted the topic of male violence to women and femicide in Turkey. Questions arose and a more profound awareness was created by a hashtag campaign to tell personal experiences of (mainly sexual) abuse. From the same academicians who started this campaign to raise awareness, An?t Sayaç (Monumental Counter) is a project combining activism with art. It is a virtual monument for the female victims of male violence, compiling their names and sourcing the related news in press, which occupy a disregarded tiny corner on newspapers. The virtual monument is valuable in terms of keeping track of these murders and how they appear on news for academicians, as well as helping perceive these victims as actual people than just some statistics.
