SauColors
Organic dye for the denim market inspired by the blue color of a swallow’s feces
SauColors is a bio-dye obtained from the berries of the elderberry tree that, when mixed with an alkaline solution, and subjected to different variations in temperature and pH, produce a wide range of colors that go from red to blue. This bio-dye is an alternative to synthetic dyes used in the textile industry, particularly in the dyeing of denim fibers, which are highly polluting. During the investigation it was determined that the molecules responsible for the coloring of the fruit are anthocyanins, water-soluble pigments that are found in some plants. With a view to scaling up the production process, the specific molecule in elderberries is being investigated for future production in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) thanks to recombinant DNA technology. In this way, the pigment will be produced in less space and more quickly than plants.
