Robotic 3D printed COVID-19 Masks enable fast response to virus outbreak
Spanish brand Nagami Design has switched the use of its robotic arm from making furniture to 3D-printing face shields for medical staff treating coronavirus patients.
Nagami Design usually makes objects such as 3D-printed chairs by Zaha Hadid Architects, but has converted its manufacturing process to address the shortage of protective equipment in hospitals. 3D printing has emerged as the ultimate tool for local manufacturing, reducing the production chain to the bare minimum and enabling on-demand production.
By designing a specific robotic version of the model and thanks to its extrusion technology, Nagami is printing around 500 COVID-19 Masks per day — or one mask every five minutes — around seven times faster than a desktop 3D printer, and the company is working around the clock in collaboration with the entire local community.
