Riding a scooter in an urban environment is an exhilarating and at the same time a dangerous experience. The traditional hard-shell helmet is soon to be a product of the past. Composite materials and new developments in textile and non-Newtonian liquid polymers are giving us an opportunity to explore and redefine standards. Adapting technologies from extreme sports and sky-diving helmets, together with cutting edge materials such as D3O and a type of Kevlar, I created a soft-shell design to better fit and protect the head of a city biker. Wearing a fabric helmet requires a huge leap of faith. With that in mind, I chose to combine soft and hard elements into the final design. As such, the CityRider urban helmet is not a revolution, but an evolution and a foretelling of things to come.
