Schistsocope
A frugal, smart and accessible diagnosis for the Neglected Tropical Disease, Schistosomiasis
Schistosomiasis is a waterborne parasitic infection largely prevalent in tropical countries infecting over 250 million people. As one of the Neglected Tropical Diseases recognised by the World Health Organisation, it seriously reduces the quality of life. To ensure timely treatment, access to accurate diagnosis is crucial but it is frequently lacking in the low-resource settings. Our research team in the Netherlands has collaborated with Nigeria to develop the Schistoscope for reliable and affordable diagnosis for Schistosomiasis. The Schistoscope provides an integrated diagnostic solution with a simplified sample preparation method, using a filter and a smart algorithm running on the low-cost smartphone. It is optimised to produce and maintain locally in Africa by utilising local filter materials and 3D-printing. The design and algorithm will be shared through an open source platform to bring the diagnostics closer to the point of need for early treatment.
