Strong efforts have been made by many international organizations to ensure quality education yet insufficient channels remains a challenge, especially for off-grid BOP, neither literally nor sanitarily. More than half of all deaths of them were caused by communicable, maternal, neonatal and nutritional conditions, which could have been effectively prevented with better education. Solar Media offers a media linking off-grid BOP to educational resources. In addition to the fundamental need of lighting and mobile phone charging, the design integrates a video player onto the controller of solar home system (SHS) for educational use. The affordability and mature sales channels of SHS in off-grid areas empower it as a more feasible and efficient channel to deliver the life-saving education. The design is expected to influence 5 million BOP families all over the world, save millions of lives from fires caused by candles, unexpected plague and reduce illiteracy.
