THE NEW NORMAL
Changing perception of food portion
The New Normal is a collection of food serving tools that proposes an alternative way of portion estimation. Created with a notion of different hand sizes and gestures instead of calorie counting, or mathematics measurement units. One major factor in rising UK obesity is Portion Distortion—the growing portion size that people call ‘normal’.This project brings the initial idea from nutritionists that we can easily compare the food portion with the individual hand size. For example; a fist of carb, a palm of protein, a thumb of fat, a cupped hand of fruit, two hands of vegetable. Each tool’s shape in the collection is created from different hand gestures to form a new memory about hand portion size when users hold each tool. By simplifying hand standard dimension and aiming to make it easy to the wide range of people, each tool in the collection is created in 5 different hand standard sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL) for men and women separately.
